Letter from the editors…
Dear Readers,

Welcome to the first issue of Sadie! Maybe you’re wondering, “Where did it all begin?” Well, a few years ago, Jesse and Susannah met briefly over homemade orange-cheesecake cupcakes (they had a best friend in common). Then, late last spring, Susannah sent Jesse an e-mail that said something along the lines of, “Wanna start something like Sassy Magazine?” Jesse was interested, and suddenly, Sadie was born. Josie, who had been Jesse’s unofficial project partner in crime before, quickly joined board and then they were three.

And the name? Ever hear of the song “Sadie, Sadie” by Barbara Streisand? Well, none of us had either until Jesse found an old picture of her parents’ wedding cake, where her mom, in a humorous gesture, got the nickname “Sadie,” from this song. A spoof on getting married and surrendering your independence—“I swear I'll do my wifely job, just sit at home, become a slob! I'm Sadie, Sadie, married lady, that's me!”—we couldn’t resist this witty and sardonic attempt at feminism and all it stood for, not to mention the Sadie Hawkins Dance, where the girls ask the guys.

But getting to the larger point of all this…Sadie is really an attempt to merge our life-long riot grrrl dreams and start something that we hope becomes a true inspiration and voice for a generation of girls younger than us. Putting together a magazine for the first time has been a total challenge, and a huge learning process, and we want to thank everyone who helped us along the way…thank you to all the contributors—writers, artists, photographers, and interviewees, and especially, especially thank you to Jon, Simon, Lauren, Agatha, Winona, and Graham for all your extra help!

Hope you enjoy!

Jesse, Josie & Susannah/Sadie
