Superheroes: Ayumi Tsubouchi

Written by Van Alexander

NAME: Ayumi Tsubouchi

PROJECTS: CHICKS RIOT! and VAMP!

When I first had the idea spring into my mind for this Superheroes piece, I immediately knew that the women celebrated in this feature had to represent as many different countries/perspectives as possible. So when my friend Amy Klein suggested I check out her friend Ayumi Tsubouchi from Japan, I was beyond intrigued to find out what she was all about. And damn! What isn’t she about?! A live music festival, a magazine, a record label, visual art, fashion. . . parties! And all with an emphasis on female badass-ery? Uh, yes please!

A Flash of Lightning Love

Written by Lauren Stern

If you haven’t heard of Lightning Love yet this year, that will change soon. The indie pop trio from Detriot, Michigan, has been around for a long time, but has been receiving tons of attention lately due to their new release, The Blonde Album. Grabbing praise in the past from publications like Paste Magazine, MTV Hive, and Diffuser.fm, these guys are slowly moving up from Detriot’s best kept secret to a big name act. While they aren’t as big as some of their indie pop counterparts just yet, their newfound successes prove that this is a band to definitely watch out for this year.

Over the past few years, prison beauty pageants have been cropping up all over the world, from Miss Jail in Brazil (last year’s winner was convicted murderer Rebecca Rhaysa Suelen Guedesin) to Miss Captivity in Lithuania. A far cry from the Trump empire pageants, with their limos, flashing paparazzi, and Oscar de la Renta gowns, these contests are held in women’s penal colonies, and the contestants have all been convicted of murder, assault, and/or robbery. This year, just before International Women’s Day, a particularly popular holiday in Eastern Europe, Maria Gapenko of the far eastern city of Vladivostok, Russia, was crowned Miss Spring 2012.
