A wonderful way to begin a new year—or a new day—is with light, nourishing food. Smoothies are an easy choice whether you have one for breakfast or as a snack later in the day.

This smoothie is one of my absolute favorites. It's chock full of mango and dark berries for vitamin C and antioxidants.  I throw in hemp seeds for protein, fiber, and Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Molasses deepens the flavor and offers a boost of iron. The vibe is bright and spicy and really gets the metabolic fires burning.

Happy New Year!

Coconut Water Smoothie with Mango and Berries

• 1 frozen banana

• 1/2 mango, peeled and cut into chunks

• 1/2 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen

• 1/2 cup yogurt

• 1 tablespoon molasses

• 1/8 rounded cup hemp seeds

• 1 cup coconut water, chilled (preferably raw and organic)

• 2 tablespoons lime juice

• pinch of cayenne

• pinch of cinnamon

Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Serves 2.
